Tarpon Springs, Florida -- A city known for its Greek heritage is now home to all of Florida's folklife traditions.
The Gulf Coast Folklife Center opens its first exhibit at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center on Friday. The exhibit explores aspects of Haitian history and traditional culture that are reflected through domestic and decorative arts, music, dance, Carnival and religion.
A public reception for the Haitian exhibit will be held Feb. 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature artist Jude Thegenus along with his paintings and music. The exhibit will run through May 20.
The Gulf Coast Folklife Center plans many other events throughout the year including monthly Night in the Islands celebrations at the Sponge Docks, cooking demonstrations at the Safford House and a workshop on Byzantine chanting at the Cultural Center.
