Tarpon Springs chosen as a "Great Boating Town"

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- The locals already know this, now the country is learning that Tarpon Springs is a great place for boating.

BoatUS Magazine just named Tarpon Springs onf of the "10 Great Boating Towns" for retirees.  BoatUS is the magazine for the country's largest recreational boat owners group, Boat Owners Association of The United States.

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office hosted their annual awards ceremony on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The awards ceremony recognizes courageous service, as well as, personal initiative in solving crimes and providing public service.

The Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year was awarded to Deputy Jim Piper and Detective Holly Tsanakaliotis. These two deputies acted courageously to save a four-year-old boy's life by administering CPR.

BarkBQ raises money for future veterinarians

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- This weekend is your chance to enjoy some great food for a great cause. 

The annual BarkBQ dinner is a fundraiser for the Veterinary Science Academy at Tarpon Springs High School.  On Friday, from 3:00-7:00pm at Tarpon Springs High School, a $10 donation will get you barbeque pork, coleslaw, baked beans, roll, dessert and a beverage--all donated by LeeRoy Selmons.  A silent auction will also be held at the event.

100 men in 100 days

Pinellas County, Florida -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas is having an upcoming event that needs 100 volunteers.

100 men volunteers to be exact.

Currently there are 131 boys who are waiting to be matched with a a male mentor in the program. Starting June 1 through September 8, the agency plants to recruit 100 male volunteers and match them with one of the boys who still need mentors.

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Humane Society of Pinellas is holding a photography contest for kids!

In honor of "Be Kind to Animals Week" children and teens can enter the contest by submitting a photo they took of a pet being treated kindly- or is just happy. There will be two age groups: 6-11 years and 11-16  years. 

The contest will run now through May 31 and is open to all children between the ages of 6 adn 16. 

Health volunteers needed

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County is looking for medical doctors, dentists and other health professionals who can give their time towards helping those in need.

Those who donate their time can earn CEUs and apply the hours they give to their license renewal fees. Hours are flexible and locations include health departments from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg, community clinics of the volunteer's own practice.
