Tarpon Springs, Florida -- A sponger may not seem like an odd choice for a mascot in a city like Tarpon Springs--where sponge diving goes back for generations.  But outside the city, it's unique.  And that uniqueness could help the Spongers win a national contest.

East Lake's Pete DiNovo Player of the Week

Tarpon Springs, FL -- East Lake Eagles quarterback Pete DiNovo is the Southern Ford Dealers Player of the Week.

The senior completed 21-31 passes for a career best 375 yards and six touchdowns, leading the Eagles to a 41-20 Class 8A-District 7 win over the Sarasota Riverview Rams.

In the game, DiNovo also became Pinellas County's all-time leader in career passing yards, with 5,767 yards.   DiNovo moves past former Tampa Bay Buccaneer  and Gibbs High School star  Shaun King, who had 5, 736 total passing yards.

Girl's Volleyball: East Lake unveils state championship banner

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- The East Lake Eagles celebrated their back-to-back state championship titles in girls volleyball this past Thursday, with the unveiling of a 2011 state championship banner.

After a very brief ceremony, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Eagles got back to action on the court, defeating district rival Sarasota Riverview, 25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 23-25, 15-17.

Countryside defeats East Lake 27-14

Clearwater, Fl - In a matchup touted as the battle for north Pinellas, the Countryside Cougars came out on top, holding off the East Lake Eagles 27-14.

For the eleventh time in the past twelve matchups between these two teams, it was Countryside (2-0) getting the win, and they did it in traditional Cougar fashion, on the ground.

The Cougars finished with 334 yards rushing, led by Mike Jerrido's 172 yards on 19 carries. 

Plant beats East Lake in overtime 28-21

There was great playoff football at East Lake High School tonight when the Eagles hosted the Plant Panthers.  This one went to overtime before Plant could celebrate a trip to the state semi-finals.

On the Plant sideline, Panther alumni and current Florida State running back James Wilder Jr. scored first on a 56-yard touchdown from Aaron Banks to Austin Roberts to lead 6-0.
