Break the mosquito cycle

Pinellas County, Florida -- Mosquitoes are on the rise in Pinellas County due to the recent rains, and that was from only one tropical storm. 

As a result, Pinellas County Mosquito Control technicians are aggressively treating known breeding areas by ground and air. Technicians have noted that many of the areas they have inspected contain standing water- the ideal breeding condition for mosquitoes. 

Pinellas County Mosquito Control is asking all citizens to do their part in reducing the mosquito population by following these simple steps:

Pinellas County, Florida -- To mark National HIV Testing Day on Friday, June 28, a partnership of several Pinellas community health organizations will be offering health screenings, vaccines and HIV tests at no cost.

The Pinellas Planning Partnership is collaborating on the community event from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Walgreens, 3350 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, to provide the screenings. No appointments are necessary.

Meeting of Brooker Book Club

Palm Harbor, Florida -- Coming up in July the Brooker Creek Preserve will be meeting to discuss books about Florida. 

The Brooker Book Club meets the first Saturday of each month and meets to discuss works by Florida authors, past and present, with archeology, biography, politics and history storylines. 

The book selection for discussion on July 6 is Star Island by Carl Hiaasen. The book club meets from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m..

The book club is free although advance registration is required because seating is limited.

With summer here, IHOP is rolling out it's new "Summer Signature Pancakes" to celebrate it's 55th anniversary, so we put our 10 News Taste Test Team up to trying their three new flapjacks features:

Banana Graham Nut Pancakes: Sliced fresh bananas grilled inside buttermilk pancakes layered with marshmallow cream, graham cracker crumbs and crushed honey-roasted pecans then topped with cinnamon cream cheese.

Cops: Pit Bull attacks 10-month-old baby

Holiday, Florida-- A 10-month-old boy was taken to the hospital Friday after being attacked and bitten by a neighbor's Pit Bull. 

The incident happened around 2 p.m., but a Pasco County Sheriff's report says deputies and Animal Control officers weren't alerted of the incident until evening. 

So far, officials say the baby's mother and a neighbor were standing outside of the home on the 2100 block of Ranchita Trail when the attack happened. They heard the dog's growls, and walked back in to find the Pit Bull biting the baby.

Pinellas animal shelter's project boasts record adoptions

Clearwater, Florida -- The Humane Society of Pinellas is excited to announced its Pick Me! Project is breaking records! 

The animal shelter says it hit a major milestone Thursday evening -- the total dog and cat adoptions for June 2013 matched the number of adoptions in all of June 2012. 

"Last year, it took all of June to put 172 dogs and cats into loving new homes, and this year, thanks to our community, we did it in under 2 weeks!" a shelter spokesperson said.
